For many of us the mornings can be a long and hard process that we must face eventually to start our days. It always feels like we never had enough sleep and that something in our mornings sets ourselves up to have an average or below average day. Here are several steps I take in the morning to help make the most out of my day and achieve my goals!

#1 Do Not Hit the Snooze Button

Hitting the snooze button get you 5, 10, maybe even 20 minutes more of sleep but, a sleep cycle takes about 90 minutes to go through. Starting a new cycle that you won’t finish does nothing beneficial for you and can even make you more tired. If you know yourself well and know that you can’t prevent yourself from hitting the snooze button keep reading for some tips I use.

Set the alarm for the morning, place your phone away from your bed (on a desk or dresser on the other side of the room), with the volume all the way up. Not only does this limit your screen time before bed (which can also be harmful for your sleep), but when the alarm goes off the in the morning, you must get out of bed to turn it off. Once you are out of bed you have overcome the biggest hurdle of the morning.

#2 Make Your Bed for Comfort and Success

It is as simple as it sounds. You may hear that making your bed is first thing you should do in the morning and here’s why. The first reason is for comfort. When you make your bed in the morning you are looking forward to a good and comfortable night’s sleep. If you have a long and stressful day, there is no better feeling then falling into an already made bed. The second reason is that it increases success in your day. Finishing a task early in the day (even if it’s just making your bed) can help you to complete tasks throughout the rest of the day, and subconsciously can help to face more daunting tasks. Bottom line is that this helps to increase your productivity. Spend two minutes making that bed!

#3 Movement Is Key

Once out of bed, take at least five minutes for stretching. Stretching is a great way to send signals to the rest of your body that it’s time to wake up. You have been inactive for the past several hours. Stretching all parts of your body is an easy way to kick that groggy feeling you have in the morning. If you want to go a step further, then do some exercise! Moving around and getting a good sweat in can be a great way to jump start your day and even help with living a healthier lifestyle as well.

#4 Embrace the Sun

Embrace the outdoors. One of the other best ways to send wake-up signals to your body is by catching some early sun rays. The sun helps us to wake up and even help us feel happier. So, take a morning stroll outside around the block or simply to grab the newspaper. Kick it up a notch and exercise or stretch outside in the sunlight!

#5 Cold Showers Aren’t that Scary

You should take a shower in the morning. At the very least to freshen up and start the day feeling clean. A cold shower can easily help you to wake up and feel re-freshened. Cold showers also have health benefits; it can help with blood circulation, it will tighten your skin, and produce shinier, stronger and healthier hair. Let’s be real, no one is staying in there longer than needed, which means you’ll be saving water as well! It’s also sustainable!

#6 Think About the Future of the Day

This is key. Envision moments within your day and watch yourself completing them. This helps for several reasons. Envisioning your day helps you plan out what needs to get done and helps with your productivity. Thinking about completing those tasks gives you the willpower and excitement to face the tasks head-on and to complete them by days end.

#7 Smile!!

Smile at someone! You just went through a great wake up process and are feeling great! Smile at those you pass in your morning routine and throughout the rest of the morning. You may have had a great morning and may be happy and excited for the rest of the day while, others may have had the opposite type of morning. Smiling at someone can help to feel appreciated and can even help to change their mood. They may be encouraged to replicate your energy!

When using these steps in the morning, you are creating a healthier, more successful and more enjoyable day for yourself! Remember, the more frequently you do this, the easier mornings will be for you. Eventually, maybe you’ll look forward to waking up! Don’t forget to smile!
